The Barazoth was a Lajakeka enhanced by the power of the Nengud-kor-Adez, and an invention of Darklord Shebnar.
History[]
In MS 5065, during the Darklands War, Archlord Gnaag tasked Darklord Shebnar with conquering Slovia, thinking this would be a simple task for the inattentive Darklord. However, Slovia was embroiled in guerilla warfare, and Shebnar became bored. He sought a way to speed up the war, and called in a favour of Darklord Taktaal (for torturing a powerful servant of his enemy) to obtain a Lajakeka. Normally a giant machine used to transport ore, Shebnar modified it with many weapons, including cannons that spewed lava from the Nengud-kor-Adez, and named it the Barazoth. The Barazoth caused havoc in Slovia, and Shebnar raised the dead as Kaggazutaagon.[1]
However, in doing so, Shebnar revealed to the rest of the world a degree of mastery Gnaag did not want to reveal this early. Shebnar's carelessness also meant that the Barazoth was placed in a location where it was unprotected. Additionally, the raising of the fallen as undead only served to infuriate and spur on the defenders. The Slovians, together with the Herbalish, drove the Barazoth into the chasm of the Stornlands, and the Herbalish stole a piece of the Barazoth, discovering its Nengud-kor-Adez origins,[2] and using it to produce an elixir that could undo — slowly — the corruption caused by the Nengud-kor-Adez.[3][4]
Design[]
In the first edition of The Darklands, the term "Barazoth" was originally the name of Darklord Shebnar's realm in the Darklands.[5] This was retconned in the second edition, where Shebnar was explicitly made a Lord within Helgedad, and most of the properties of his realm were transferred to Shebnar's Sector, his domain in Helgedad.[6]
