Barazoth (domain)

Barazoth, dubbed The Province of Pain, was a Darklands realm. It was formerly ruled by Darklord Shebnar.

It only appears in the first edition of The Darklands, and was retconned out of existence in the second edition.

Geography

Barazoth was a nondescript realm of the Darklands, with no military value. Its only notable settlement is Shindaar, an underground labyrinth of cells, residence halls and private torture rooms. It is guarded by Barren Souls that were created by the terrible torture and magic within Barazoth.

Politics

During the time of Archlord Zagarna, Barazoth was ruled by Darklord Shebnar. Shebnar was uninterested in Darklord politics, and kept to himself in Barazoth, fascinated by the concept of pain, inventing new forms of torture. Other Darklords occasionally sent prisoners to Shebnar for his experiments.

History

Not much is known about Barazoth, including after the demise of the Darklords.

Design

In the first edition of The Darklands, Darklord Shebnar's realm was stated to be Barazoth. In the second edition, however, Shebnar is explicitly mentioned as a Lord of Helgedad. Shebnar instead rules over Shebnar's Sector in Helgedad, containing the Cell Ward, and is in charge of its prisons. The vast majority of Barazoth's traits and properties were also migrated to Shebnar's Sector instead.

The term "Barazoth" was later repurposed to describe the Barazoth, an enhanced Lajakeka, using the power of the Nengud-kor-Adez as a weapon, invented by Shebnar.
