Bern I (MS 3782–3840) was the fourteenth Monarch of Sommerlund.
Biography[]
Bern was born in Anskaven[1] as the son of Ulnar I. Bern and was crowned King Bern I in MS 3800 after his father's death at the Battle of Maakengorge. During the Battle of Moytura Pass, the Brotherhood of the Crystal Star had placed an enchantment on the Sommerswerd, and they warned Bern I that it was wearing off and was vulnerable to a powerful spell of destruction by the Nadziranim. Bern I reasoned that using the Sommerswerd to slay a Darklord was useless if its army could not beat the Darklands, and thus decided to pursue strength in numbers. Sommerlund and Durenor entered into an agreement where the Sommerswerd would be kept in Durenor in exchange for the Seal of Hammerdal, an ultimate act of trust between the two allies.[2]
Shortly after MS 3799, Toran College, which had been destroyed in MS 3788, was rebuilt on the orders of Bern I.[3]
Under Bern I, Sommerlund expanded its borders into and beyond Moytura Pass, founding the province of Ruanon, and major settlements Maaken and Ruanon Town. This proved to be lucrative for Sommerlund, with the region proving to be fertile and full of resources, and trade boomed with the Stornlands.[2]
The Freelands Alliance was formed under Bern I, with multiple nations having helped Sommerlund secure victory against the Darklands. Multiple nations in Northern and Southern Magnamund were persuaded to join the Alliance, vowing to defeat all forces of Darkness on Magnamund.[2]
In MS 3810, Bern I's friend and vassal, Baron Shaen Ruanor, returned from his quest to retrieve the Lorestones of Nyxator, and had discovered the immense wisdom within. He became the first Kai Lord, renaming himself Sun Eagle, and founded the Order of the Kai. Bern I gave Sun Eagle the Kai Protectorate, a piece of Crown land for the Order of the Kai to control. At the centre was the Kai Monastery, which was built in MS 3822.[4] A grand Sommlending oak tree was said to have been planted at Oak Hill that same year, in honour of his father, Ulnar I, and called the Ulnar Oak.[5] With Sun Eagle now leading the Order of the Kai, the title of Baron of Toran was given to Count Vinas.[6]
At an unknown point in Bern I's reign, the Kirlundin Isles were resettled.[7]
Bern I died in MS 3840, and was succeeded by Hobar I.
