The Kingdom of Bor a mountain kingdom in the Great Bor Range, mostly underground, populated by by dwarves. Its capital is Boradon.
History[]
Early history[]
Bor is the one of the major civilisations of the dwarves of Magnamund, the other being Boden in Southern Magnamund, opposite Bor on the Tentarias. Much of Bor's civilisation lies underground and operates a mining economy.[3]
During the Great Plague, most of Bor's human population was exterminated. The Drodarin Dwarves and a few Giants survived underground, hiding from the disease. The Dwarves continued the science of their former human compatriots, perfecting the art of boom powder and firearms. These weapons became the specialties of the Dwarves, who used them widely in their mercenary expeditions worldwide.[4]
Around 3572 MS, where Agarash was banished, his lieutenant and Child of Agarash, Demonlord Shom'zaa, was sealed deep underneath Bor by the Elder Magi.[2]
Darklands War[]
The secrets of the Borese were highly-coveted by the Darklords, but they failed to capture this information. Even a motley crew of bandits would become deadly with Borese arms; it was in the interest of the Freelands that they did not fall to deadlier enemies, such as the Drakkarim.[4]
During the Darklands War between MS 5060 and MS 5070, Bor aided various Freelands forces. A group of dwarves helped Talestria and Palmyrion, under the command of Lord Adamas of Talestria, defeating Ogia and invading the Hammerlands from the east, conquering Xanar.[5] Another group of dwarves helped Eru and Lencia invade the Hammerlands from the west, conquering Blackshroud. However, they were unaware that the Darklords had created the Tanoz-tukor, allowing them to operate outside of the Darklands, and Archlord Gnaag revealed this in MS 5062, with Lone Wolf and the remaining Lorestones banished to the Daziarn during the reveal.[6] The Eru-Lencia-Bor forces were dangerously overextended as a result, and came under severe attack in the Hammerlands. They were rescued by Banedon, whose Borese crew of the Skyrider had urged him to help, who used a second-level Brotherhood spell to help the leaders of Eru, Lencia and Bor to escape.[7]
Most of the retreating forces took refuge deep in the tunnels of Bor. In MS 5064, Darklords Tomogh and Dakushna cleared out the remnants of the Freelands forces in the Hammerlands, and invaded the tunnels themselves. Many dwarves were slain in the invasion. They were stopped by bo'sun Nolrim and Captain Prarg using Old Kingdom Magic, forcing them to abandon the attack, and they turned their attention to Western Eru instead.[8] King Sarnac of Lencia was thought to have perished in this attack.[9]
By MS 5064, the Darklords had conquered Eru and begun to invade Lencia. King Sarnac, thought to have perished, emerged from hiding, and challenged Darklord Ghanesh, leading the land assault of Lencia, to combat at the doorstep of Bor. Ghanesh, unable to resist, accepted, but at Bor, King Sarnac fled into the tunnels, and Ghanesh pursued. However, this was a trap. Captain Prarg and the dwarves used boom powder to collapse the tunnel on Ghanesh, allowing Sarnac to escape and Lencia to rally its forces. However, this was only temporary, as Talestria and Palmyrion too eventually fell some time between MS 5067 and MS 5070, and Bor was blockaded by Darklord Mrugor.[10]
The Darklords' assault was stopped in MS 5070 when Lone Wolf killed Archlord Gnaag and destroyed the Transfusor, which powered the Tanoz-tukor.
Return of Shom'zaa[]
In MS 5084, Crown Prince Leomin, in his greed, ordered the excavations deep underground. However, they accidentally awoke Demonlord Shom'zaa, sealed away over eight millennia ago. He and his Agarashi fought the Borese, reinforcing themselves in the captured armouries underground. Leomin and his younger brother, Torfan, were trapped in the Throne Chamber of Bor. Bor's seat of power, the Throne of Andarin, contained a gem of power from the Goddess Ishir, allowing the dwarves to grow crops underground without sunlight. Without the gem, Bor would suffer from a famine, even if Shom'zaa were defeated. During the events of The Fall of Blood Mountain, Lone Wolf sent Grand Master to defeat the threat, using a Sun-crystal provided by the Elder Magi to seal away Shom'zaa once again.[2]
Grand Master fought their way through Shom'zaa's forces, and managed to seal away Shom'zaa; however, Prince Leomin died helping them.[11] Grand Master then returned to the Throne Chamber to secure the Throne of Andarin, where he met Prince Torfan and his defending forces. Grand Master and the dwarves were forced to defend against hordes of Shom'zaa Agarashi, desperate to destroy the Throne. They held on long enough for King Ryvin's army to reinforce the defenders from the surface, destroying the Shom'zaa horde.[12] For their efforts, Grand Master was awarded the Cross of Boradon (Bor's highest honour for courage and gallantry), the freedom of Bor, and the honorary rank and title of War-thane, a title rarely given to those of non-Drodarin descent.[13]
Geography[]
Most of Bor lies underground in the Great Bor Range, as a huge network of tunnels. Thanks to the magical gem seated in the Throne of Andarin, they can grow crops underground.
Bor's main neighbours to the north are the hostile Hammerlands and the Danarg. To the east lies Eru, and to the west Talestria. To the south lies the Tentarias, with the Great Drodarin Trough passing by. Opposite Bor lies Boden, where their dwarf cousins live, in the Boden Range. The port-cities of Tsor, Lon Kris, Arian and Port Daw sit on the Tentarias.
Much of its civilization is below ground, with life-sustaining radiation coming from Throne of Andarin. The Drodarian dwarves are renowned throughout Magnamund for making Bor Muskets, which are primitive firearms that are nonetheless lethal at close range, and Bor Brew, an exceptionally powerful alcoholic drink.
Politics[]
Bor is a Kingdom that appears to pass from father to son.
King Ryvin is the only known ruler of Bor. His heir was Crown Prince Leomin, who perished defending against Demonlord Shom'zaa; succession may have transferred to Prince Torfan.
Demographics[]
In MS 5050, Bor's population was 130,000.[1]
In the gamebooks[]
Bor is only visited in The Fall of Blood Mountain, where the book is set. In this book, Grand Master is dispatched to destroy the threat of Demonlord Shom'zaa and his Agarashi horde, before they can destroy the Throne of Andarin and set up a hold for further evil to expand from. During this book, many useful items are obtained, such as Sunderer, a Korlinium Chainmail Vest, and a Drodarin Bag of Holding.[14] The Andarin Warhammer can also be obtained.[15]
