Darklord Chlanzor (IPA: /klænzɔːr/[3]) (died MS 5070) was a Darklord and ruler of Northern Skaror.

Appearance[]

Chlanzor was a rotund, vile creature, even by the standards of his fellow Darklords. He was insect-like in appearance, with four spider legs supporting a humanoid torso, with black hair on his back, but hairless and clammy on his chest and arms. His face was misshapen and bears mandibles in his maw.[2]

Personality[]

Chlanzor ruled the land of Northern Skaror, a province full of decay and disease, and of no interest to any other Darklord. Chlanzor usually kept to himself in Gazad Helkona, investigating the source of the land's decay. As such, his political ambitions were largely unknown by his fellow Darklords, and he rarely interacted with them, save when ordered to by the current Archlord.[1]

In battle, Chlanzor preferred to eat live prey; he rarely fought, but when he did, he usually began a fight with his deadly bite and a virulent poison that either killed or incapacitated. His sign was a great black spider perched on the surface of a blazing sun.

Biography[]

Chlanzor arrived on Magnamund with his fellow Darklords in MS 3072, and became Lord of Gazad Helkona by the time Zagarna became Archlord.

Chlanzor's realm was an unstable one, where construction was often shattered by incessant earthquakes. As such, Chlanzor's motivations were unknown to his fellow Darklords. Chlanzor once summoned a Greater Demon, Fidazkh, nearly as powerful as himself, to guard his citadel, but no-one knew what his true intention was. Chlanzor was also believed to be responsible for the Skryza infestation of the Helkona Forest. During the time of Archlord Zagarna, he task was to watch over the Freelands to the south of the Darklands, which Chlanzor used as an excuse to order his Kraan to capture live humans as food, or for experiments by his Nadziranim.[1]

In MS 5062, Chlanzor and fellow Darklord Kraagenskûl led an army of Giaks to fight against the forces of Lord Adamas in Zuttezna, who was attempting to storm Torgar to rescue thousands of slaves imprisoned within. Lord Adamas soundly defeated the Darklords' armies, sending them back to Cragmantle in retreat.[4] However, this retreat did not last long. Aided by the Tanoz-tukor, allowing the Darklords to operate freely outside of the Darklands, Archlord Gnaag ordered the two Darklords to attack Talestria and Palmyrion. Chlanzor led the push south, while Kraagenskûl headed to the Danarg to muster the Agarashi to the Darklords' cause. Talestria and Palmyrion fell into chaos, facing a foe they could not defeat.[5] However, Chlanzor was driven back in Phoena after Lord Ardan used the power of the Triple Towers of Phoena.[6] In MS 5064, Kraagenskûl abandoned his attempts to sway the Agarashi, as though they were powerful, they were uncontrollable. He rejoined Chlanzor and the two redoubled their efforts to conquer Talestria.[7]

In MS 5065, with several Darklords having faced setbacks, Gnaag ordered Darklords Chlanzor, Menashga, Zhanshal and Shebnar to work together to conquer Talestria, Palmyrion and Slovia, and some time between MS 5067 and 5070, Chlanzor and Menashga led an invasion of Talestria and Palmyrion, which finally fell.[8]

Chlanzor died in MS 5070, after Lone Wolf destroyed the Transfusor, causing the Tanoz-tukor to stop working, meaning he could not survive for long outside of the Darklands. For his failure, his spirit was trapped and tortured in the Plain of Despair by Naar.[9]

In the gamebooks[]

Chlanzor is not encountered directly by Lone Wolf in his adventure. However, in Trail of the Wolf, Grand Master explores Gazad Helkona, the former fortress of Chlanzor, and encounters various relics and pieces of lore related to him. A Black Amulet, engraved with the emblem of Darklord Chlanzor, can be obtained in this adventure.

Notes[]

  1. Gazad Helkona is the main settlement of Northern Skaror.

"I can assure you that this specific scene in LW20, in the Plain of Despair, did not feature all the villains Lone Wolf canonically slew during his adventures. Simply because there are too many spirits who were specifically punished by Naar for their failures, Lone Wolf couldn't see all of them. And so, among them, you do have Darklord Zagarna, even if not mentioned. As well as the other Darklords that Lone Wolf didn't know personally (considering Claws of Helgedad is not canon in the main continuity). All were judged supreme failures by Naar and punished the same way - this is the fate of the champions of Darkness who don't succeed in their conquests. You can think about all the major servants of the God Naar slain by Lone Wolf - they are here, somewhere in the Plain of Despair, suffering terrible tortures. Cadak was a notable exception, his soul being sold and bound to the Lords of Decay."
