Cralin Baarg (died MS 5000)[note 1] was a former Kai Initiate who was expelled from the Order of the Kai, turning vengeful and becoming the so-called "Master of Malis Mound", believing himself to be a powerful necromancer. During the events of Book of Kai Legends, Baarg began creating an army of undead at Malis Mound, and began to cause havoc. Unbeknownst to him, however, the Cener Druids had made Baarg into a scapegoat to provide a plausible excuse for the rotting vegetation caused by their own experiments, whilst keeping their presence at Malis Mound secret. Baarg's plot was foiled and he was either slain or executed, depending on the actions of the player.
Biography[]
Cralin Baarg was once inducted into the Order of the Kai, reaching the rank of Initiate. However, he possessed a terrible character, lacking in integrity. He was extremely greedy, and above all, desired to obtain power at any cost. As such, he failed the tests of the Order of the Kai, and was expelled. Baarg became vengeful, obsessively so, turning into a madman. He began dabbling with Right-Handed Magic, damaging his psyche even further, and eventually decided that the knowledge of the Cener Druids was his pathway to revenge.[2]
During this time, the Cener Druids operated out of Malis Mound in secret, but their latest experiments had caused the surrounding trees to mutate and wither, and they feared being discovered. When Baarg arrived in Malis Mound, seeking Cenerese knowledge, they decided to turn him into a scapegoat. They provided a necromantic spell on a scroll and left it in plain sight within the great entrance hall of Malis Mound, which Baarg dutifully found, and believed himself to have become a powerful necromancer.[2]
During the events of Book of Kai Legends, Sommerlund army patrols noticed suspicious activity in Malis Mound, and investigated, only for the Giaks and Doomwolves to slaughter them, and Baarg raised them as undead; further patrol parties, of increasing size, were also mostly killed, and increased the size of Baarg's undead army as a result.[3] His plans drew the attention of a party of Kai Lords, who were investigating the struggles of the patrols at Malis Mound. At Malis Mound, Baarg was confronted by the Kai, and was defeated, whether he was either slain, or taken back to Fort Durnspa for sentencing, where he was executed the next day. However, depending on the narrator, Baarg may have become an undead after his death, or was taken to the Kai Monastery by the Kai (where he would have been banned from), or escaped his execution at Fort Durnspa.[2]
Baarg's execution led the Kai to believe that the threat of Malis Mound was over, and as such, the Cenerese plot to use Baarg as a scapegoat was successful.[2] This later allowed Gardor Vezh to take control of Malis Mound for his own rituals in MS 4994.[4]
