The Kingdom of Delden is a country in the Stornlands. Its capital is Luyen.
History[]
Delden was founded in MS 1862.[4] It was formed by lands from its warring neighbours Magador and Eldenora, who established the Knights of the Owl, an alliance of embittered nobles holding land during the Age of the Black Moon. During the War of the Lorestone, the Knights of the Owl collapsed, and the crown of Delden was claimed by the House of Naumon of Eldenora.[4]
For a time, Delden lived in harmony with its neighbours. However, a series of accidents placed a third son, Vaamon, on the throne. Vaamon was swayed by mysterious allies promising him power and wealth if he put Delden on a war footing. However, this was opposed by others, and he was eventually deposed in favour of his cousin Naumon, but Delden was already at war. Naumon, a genius tactician, managed to prevail, but conflict kept returning to Delden, leading to constant instability. Few monarchs have reigned more than ten years in Delden.[7]
In MS 5083, during the events of Rune War, Lord Vandyan discovered the Runes of Agarash, and using its power, seized the throne of Eldenora, and began building up his forces with Magadorian and Ogian mercenaries. Vandyan falsely accused Delden of violating Eldenoran territory, and when Delden mustered its forces to protect its borders, Vandyan accused them of aggression and declared war. Delden fell quickly, with Vandyan quickly pressing on conquer Magador and Salony.[6] Vandyan's rule of tyranny was broken when Grand Master infiltrated Eldenora and destroyed the Runes of Agarash, destroying his command over the Agarashi summoned, and driving him back to Eldenora.
In MS 5092, Vandyan was assassinated in Eldenora. King Loarn of Delden was swayed by the Acolytes of Vashna to claim Eldenora's rich forests, taking advantage of the chaos.[3] This sparked the War of the Warrens, which Delden lost in MS 5093, and Eldenora gained territory and tribute. The Acolytes of Vashna continued to operate openly in the Stornlands, including Delden, until the present day.[8][note 1]
Geography[]
Delden is part of the Stornlands. It is surrounded by Magador to the north, Salony to the east, Eldenora and Palmyrion to the south, and Talestria to the west. It is surrounded by mountains.
Politics[]
Delden is a kingdom. It is claimed by the House of Naumon of Eldenora.
Known rulers of Delden[]
- Vaamon (unknown)[7]
- Naumon (unknown, usurped)[7]
- At least six monarchs before Naumon II[7]
- Naumon II (MS 5000)[7]
- Naumon III (MS 5050)[1]
- Loarn (MS 5092–present)[3]
Economy[]
Not much is known about Delden's economy, although its instability makes prosperity difficult. Delden's markets do have wares to sell, but its instability means that buyers are reluctant to enter the country, and under the rule of King Naumon II in MS 5000, goods were "confiscated" by soldiers on a regular basis, depending on what Delden needed.[7]
Demographics[]
Delden's population was 65,000 between MS 5000–5050, of which the vast majority (40,000) lived in Luyen in MS 5000.[1][7]
In the gamebooks[]
Delden is not visited in the gamebooks. It is mentioned in passing most prominently in Rune War, as the first victim of Lord Vandyan's conquests.
