Lone Wolf

The Magiocracy of Dessi (IPA: /dəˈsaɪ/[4], "duh-Sai") is a country in Northern Magnamund, and home of the Elder Magi. Its capital is Elzian.

History[]

During the Age of Eternal Night, the Elder Magi fought Agarash, eventually banishing him to the Pit of Eternal Pain in 3572 MS. In 2514 MS, they were decimated by the Great Plague, and the remainder sought refuge in the mountains of Dessi, where they have resided since.

For millennia, the Elder Magi helped the forces of Good, fighting the forces of the Darklands, and the remnants of the Agarashi, amongst others. During the Darklands War, in MS 5065, Darklords Tomogh and Khatellu prepared to invade Dessi. The forces of Light took up defences in the bordering nations of Firalond, Lourden and Kakush. In nearby Bautar, Elder Magus Lord Ardan's body arrived there for healing, haven fallen into a coma fighting Darklord Menashga. Grey Star repurposed an ancient Shianti artifact, originally capable of channelling energy from the Plane of Darkness, to channel energy to the Plane of Light for this purpose. However, Darklord Tomogh, dubbed "Master of Magic", seized control of the artifact and restored it to its original purpose, empowering himself and his army. Firalond, Lourden and Kakush were no match for Tomogh, and fell quickly, as did the entirety of Western Dessi by MS 5070.[5]

In MS 5101, earthquakes rocked the Chasm of Gorgoron, and swarms of Agarashi infiltrated Dessi.[6] Led by Aagnor the Darkweaver, the Agarashi displayed surprising tactical acumen, devastating Dessi and besieging Elzian. The Agarashi horde was defeated after Kai Grand Master Star Lynx defeated Aagnor.[7]

This section contains spoilers for Light of the Kai.

In c. MS 5105, during the events of Light of the Kai, Dessi marched alongside the armies of Anari, Sommerlund, Cloeasia, Durenor, Kakush, Firalond, and, surprisingly, Vassagonia.[8]

Geography[]

Dessi is located in a rainforest on the eastern coast of Northern Magnamund. It is bordered to the north by Vassagonia, separated by the Great Masourn Mountains, with the evil fortress of Kazan-Oud sitting in a lake nearby. To the west lies Valerion and Kakush, close allies. To the south lies the Dessi Trench, becoming the eastern entrance of the Tentarias, with the country of Shadaki lying opposite it.

Politics[]

Dessi is led by the Magi Regnanti, also known as the Council of Elder Wizards. Notable members of this council, as of MS 5103, are Lord Rimoah and Lord Ardan.

Demographics[]

Dessi is the home of the remaining Elder Magi, although their total now sits in the hundreds. In MS 5050, Dessi's population was about 4,000, of which most live in Hikas and Anasundi.[1][note 1]

In the gamebooks[]

Lone Wolf's Magnakai quest involves the recovery of the Lorestones, and as such, the player spends several adventures in-and-around Dessi, as the Elder Magi possess the most knowledge about the Lorestones. In particular, Castle Death is set in Dessi, although the vast majority of the gamebook is spent in the fortress of Kazan-Oud. The next adventures, The Jungle of Horrors and The Cauldron of Fear, start in Dessi, but the player journeys to other countries shortly afterwards.

Grand Master travels to Dessi in Voyage of the Moonstone, bearing the Moonstone, en route to the Isle of Lorn, Grand Master's final destination. During this journey, Grand Master visits Bavari, Hikas and Elzian. This is the only place in the New Order series where Dessi is visited.

Although Dessi is not visited often in the gamebooks, the Elder Magi make frequent occurrences in the gamebooks.

Notes[]

  1. Lone Wolf: The Roleplaying Game (p. 201) states that Dessi's population is 20,000 as of MS 5000, but the constituent numbers by city do not match this total, which is closer to 4,000.
