Elgazaad, dubbed The Province of Gold, was a Darklands realm that was retconned away in the second edition of The Darklands. In the first edition, it was where the wealth of the Darklands was concentrated — gold not being of major importance to the Darklands, although it was important to its allies — and unlike most of the other Darklands realms, was a place of relative luxury. Its capital was Akku. It was also the initial realm of Darklord Xog.

Geography[]

Elgazaad was located to the west of the Darklands, and north of the Drakkarim nation of Nyvoz. The trade city of Akku was the most direct entrance into the south-western corner of the Darklands. Several smaller forts dotted the border with Nyvoz.[1]

Politics[]

During the time of Archlord Zagarna, Elgazaad was ruled by Darklord Xog. Day-to-day control was run by Shorah Telaina, a Helghast who adopted the guise of an attractive human female, a personal creation of Xog. She was a powerful pawn and dependable administrator.[1]

History[]

Elgazaad's location, close to its Drakkarim allies made it a valuable trade destination. Elgazaad amassed much wealth, with Akku's inhabitants surrounded by fine curtains and gold. However, all this gold was not of much use to the Darklands, who ruled with power, terror and fear. Nevertheless, this gave Elgazaad a strange appearance, rather unlike any of other Darklands realms. Despite the wealth, gold could not buy freedom in the Darklands: Elgazaad was served by 20,000 non-military slaves, who were considered less disposable than other places in the Darklands.[1]

Design[]

Elgazaad only appears in the first edition of The Darklands, where it was the realm of Darklord Xog.[1] This was retconned in the second edition, where Xog's attempts to create his own realm, starting with the fortress-city of Akku, were unsuccessful.[2] Instead, after his exile, he returned to and was made a Lord of Helgedad.[3]
