The Palinate of Firalond is a country in Northern Magnamund. It is known for its cotton-rich fields. Its capital is Firina.

History[]

Firalond began as a trading outpost, with a small amount of cotton-making, farmers and horse-breeders. The farming industry grew to an extent that sheep began to be imported, which in turn led to wool production. The quality of its wool became famous for its high quality, leading to the rapid growth of the outpost. This outpost was named "Firalond" after the name of the weaver, Joraia Firalond.[3]

Firalond's success drew the attention of raiders and bandits, forcing it to hire mercenaries and erect defences. Over time, the outpost became city-scale, becoming known as the city of Firina, Firalond's future capital. The satellite towns of Varl and Ferrar turned Firalond from a city into a stable country.[3]

Despite Firalond's relative stability, its close ties with Kakush and Anari have made it an enemy of the powerful empire of Vassagonia.[3][2]

In MS 5061 during the events of The Cauldron of Fear and at the start of the Darklands War, Zakhan Kimah of Vassagonia allied himself with the Darklords and attacked the capital of Anari, Tahou, just as Lone Wolf too arrived in Tahou to search for the Lorestone. After finding the Lorestone, Lone Wolf and Kimah fought a ferocious battle, with Lone Wolf prevailing. The forces of Firalond, Lourden and Kakush then arrived to drive the Vassagonian forces away.[4]

Firalond proper escaped invasion for several years, until around MS 5065, Darklords Tomogh and Khatellu set their sights on Dessi. The Elder Magi, Gray Star, Lord Paido and their combined forces began to reinforce Firalond, Lourden and Kakush, Dessi's neighbours. However, Darklord Tomogh took control of an artifact initially used to revive Lord Ardan, empowering himself and his army. With this additional power, Firalond, Lourden and Kakush were overrun, and Tomogh struck deep into Dessi.[5] The Darklords' conquests were finally halted in MS 5070 when Lone Wolf slew Archlord Gnaag and destroyed the Transfusor, which powered the Tanoz-tukor, allowing the Darklords to survive outside of the Darklands.

In MS 5083, during the events of Rune War, mercenaries from Firalond, Anari and Kakush arrived to help defend the town of Quarlen from Lord Vandyan's forces.[6]

In MS 5102, Firalond was involved in the defence of Anari after a horde of Agarashi appeared in the underground city of Crocaryx.[7]

Geography[]

Firalond is famous for its cotton-rich fields. It is bordered to the north-east by Kakush, separated by the Kakush Uplands. To the south lies Valerion, and to the west lies Lourden and Slovia. To the north lies Anari, separated by the border town of Navasari. The River Galdon demarcates Firalond's western border, and it leads to the city of Comana, flowing through Bautar and eventually into the Midsea of the Tentarias.

Politics[]

Firalond is a Palinate.[note 1]

Firalond is close allies with Kakush and Anari, which in turn has made it an enemy of Vassagonia.[2]

List of known rulers of Firalond[]

  • Grandar Beylian (during MS 5000–present)[3][1]

Economy[]

Firalond's main export is its textiles. It is famous for the quality of its textiles; even the Kai cloaks are not as fine as those sold in Firina.[3]

Despite its success, Firalond's leaders have attempted to diversify its economy, lest something happen to its weavers. However, these attempts have not been successful.[3]

Demographics[]

Firalond had a population of 89,000 in MS 5050.[1]

In the gamebooks[]

Firalond is not visited in the gamebooks. It is mentioned in passing in The Cauldron of Fear and Rune War, as Firalond sends its forces and/or mercenaries to aid its allies in Anari and Lyris respectively.[4][6]

Notes[]

  1. It is not defined what a "Palinate" is. However, similar words have been used to describe political entities in Europe. A palatinate (or palatine) described an area ruled by a noble enjoying a degree of autonomy from a kingdom in modern-day United Kingdom and Ireland, Greece, Hungary, Poland and Ukraine. In what is modern-day Germany, it was used to describe various states of the Holy Roman Empire and today's modern federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
