Funghaarn the Witherer is a Decay-master and Child of Agarash. He is the master of the Kelderwood Forest, a forest overrun by poisonous flora.[1][2]
In the gamebooks[]
In The Dusk of Eternal Night, if Grand Master chooses to investigate the Kelderwood Forest to look for clues about how to open a Gate of Doom, they will run into Funghaarn's power after meeting Scaldar's spirit. Funghaarn does not attack directly, but via a possessed zombie, as an Avatar of Funghaarn.
Funghaarn will first try to ensnare Grand Master, potentially resulting in death.
This can be avoided if Grand Master has Grand Pathsmanship and is Sun Prince.[3] If not, Grand Master may choose to combine the Scarlet Fire Rod (if they have it) with Elementalism or Magi-Magic to ignite the Scarlet Fire, inflicting significant damage on Grand Master (-12 Endurance; and -2 Combat Skill unless Grand Master possesses a Platinum Amulet), and destroys all liquid items in their possession — this action will, however, also destroy Funghaarn without combat.[4]
If Grand Master lacks the Scarlet Fire Rod (and either Elementalism or Magi-Magic), they will face a possible roll of death (0-4) to break free of Funghaarn's grasp. One of these options can be employed to improve the roll:[5]
- Kai-alchemy at Sun Knight or higher: +3 (Strength)
- Magi-magic at Sun Lord or higher: +2 (Energy Grasp)
- Magi-magic, Kai-alchemy or Kai-Surge: +1
If the roll fails, Grand Master will lose 7 Endurance points.[6] If Grand Master is wearing Xenghora, this will protect Grand Master and force Funghaarn to release them, to be fought in combat.[7] The option to use the Scarlet Fire Rod and Elementalism or Magi-Magic will also be presented again. If Grand Master is unable to, or chooses not to, this results in death.[8]
If the Scarlet Fire Rod is not used, the Avatar of Funghaarn will be fought.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avatar of Funghaarn | 54 | 44 | 37 | Encountered if Grand Master possesses Grand Pathsmanship and is Sun Prince. Any wounds inflict an extra 2 Endurance points of damage on Grand Master, unless they wear Xenghora. |
| Avatar of Funghaarn | 57 | 44 | 71 | Otherwise, and if Grand Master chooses not use the Scarlet Fire Rod. Any wounds inflict an extra 3 Endurance points of damage on Grand Master; reduced to 2 if Grand Master has Grand Nexus, Deliverance at Kai Grand Defender or higher, or a Golta Pad. |
In both cases, the Avatar of Funghaarn is immune to Mindblast but not Kai-Surge. Also, if Grand Master possesses Astrology and is Sun Prince, since the fight is above ground, this improved discipline can be used to reduce the Avatar of Funghaarn's Combat Skill by -2 per round (Funghaarn is a Child of Agarash).
Although Funghaarn is a Child of Agarash, he is not considered to be an Agarashi.[9] However, whether or not he is vulnerable to the effects of Star-Ska as a result has not been finalised, and is left to the reader's interpretation.[10]

Cubicle 7, p. 6. “Every child of Agarash was unique, and each bore a fragment of its creator’s power. For instance, Shoongath was born of the Demonlord’s cunning and intellect, the Shom’zaa was invested with his mastery over the powers of Chaos, Aagnor the Darkweaver was a reflection of his strategic genius while Karthogg the Doombringer was born of his god-like physical might. Because of this gift they were each an immortal being, continuously drawing energy and reviving power directly from the Plane of Darkness by way of a magical ethereal link. They were able to create creatures that possessed a smaller fragment of Agarash’s formidable might. These later generations became known as the Agarashi – the Creatures of Darkness, a collective of demonic races which, unlike all other Demons (see Chapter Extraplanar Creatures), are born on and bound to Magnamund.” (emphasis added manually)
