Lone Wolf

Holmgard Press is a publishing company setup by Joe Dever to publish his works. It serves as one of the handlers of his literary estate.

History[]

Joe Dever began to author the Lone Wolf gamebook series in 1985, starting with Flight from the Dark. Over time, Dever expanded the series with various publishers until The Hunger of Sejanoz in 1998. However, at that point, the gamebook craze had begun to decline, and publisher Red Fox ended the publication, including restricting The Hunger of Sejanoz to 300 sections, rather than the traditional 350.[1] This led to the series being unfinished for many years.[2]

Over time, interest in Lone Wolf slowly began to revive, and Dever decided to setup Holmgard Press to complete and publish the entire 32-book saga. In 2016, The Storms of Chai was finally published by Holmgard Press, 18 years after The Hunger of Sejanoz.[2]

Joe Dever passed away on the 29th of November, 2016. Before his death, he outlined the plans for the series to his son, Ben, and long-term fan and collaborator Vincent Lazzari. Together with Holmgard Press, they authored and published Dead in the Deep in 2019, and The Dusk of Eternal Night in 2020. The final books in the series, Light of the Kai (parts 1 and 2), are set to be published in 2025.[2]

Holmgard Press also took on the arduous task of publishing the Definitive Editions of the books: All 32 books in hardback, paperback and ebook formats, with applied errata, rebalanced gameplay, and new artwork.[2]

In 2024, Holmgard Press published The Huntress, a new series by Jonathan Stark, set in the Lone Wolf universe but featuring a new series-eponymous player character, The Huntress.[2]
