Lone Wolf

Joe Dever's Lone Wolf is a mobile game with a new story, written by Joe Dever. It was released in four episodes in 2013 and in PC format in 2014. It takes place during the Kai series, and traces Lone Wolf's investigation into why a mountain village near the Kai monastery has suddenly ceased communications with the rest of the kingdom.

Changes to Gameplay[]

  • The player has the use of the same Kai Disciplines as in the books, but several similar disciplines have been combined: Tracking and Hunting have been combined into "Survival," and Mindblast and Mindshield have been condensed into a single discipline.
  • Instead of freely being able to choose the Disciplines they would like to have, the player must select from a set of four either-or decisions (Survival or Healing, Mind Over Matter or Mindblast and Mindshield, Weaponskill or Animal Kinship, and Sixth Sense or Camouflage).
  • All Disciplines have uses during combat.
  • Disciplines draw from a "Kai power" meter, as does using the Sommerswerd in combat. Kai power can be refilled by certain items, meditation on the map screen (which may cause the player to be attacked if in a dangerous area), or defeating opponents with a special QTE.
  • Lone Wolf carries the Sommerswerd for most of the game, but because using the sword costs Kai power, he relies on normal weapons for combat. Any use of the Sommerswerd's attacks causes all of its unlocked abilities to go into a cooldown period. Lone Wolf needs to use the Sommerswerd's attacks to make progress to unlock higher level attacks with it.
  • The selection of weapons has also been simplified to three options: maces (powerful but slow), swords (fast but weak), and axes (in-between).
  • Wielding the same weapon for a long period of time will cause it to dull and deal less damage. Weapons can be repaired at shops.
  • Combat involves both melee fighting and secondary weapons such as throwing daggers, crossbows and grenades.
  • The game has more of a "leveling" system than the books' mechanics. Making certain types of decisions will cause Lone Wolf's statistics or other abilities to increase.

Plot[]

The plot is set between the events of The Caverns of Kalte and The Chasm of Doom.

Lone Wolf hears of a Darklands attack on Rockstarn, a mining village in Sommerlund near the border with the Darklands. As Fryearl of the region, he is duty-bound to investigate. He travels alone to the village, where he finds that there has indeed been a Darklord attack that slaughtered most of the inhabitants. The village is still occupied by giaks when he arrives. While hiding from the attackers he encounters Leandra, the young daughter of a local inventor Jen Redalion. Together they escape the village into the Bronin mines that are the lifeblood of Rockstarn's economy, where the survivors had retreated to.

In the mines, Lone Wolf and Leandra first beat off a Darklands attack on the survivors, then rescue Jen from a troop of Drakkarim. The Drakkarim were transporting Jen to the Darklands, and Jen informs Lone Wolf that this was because he and Leandra had been working with Shianti relics, some of which produced great but difficult-to-control power. The Darklords wanted to learn to use the power, and they had attacked Rockstarn to seize both the research and the researchers. Jen had prohibited Leandra from working on the relics after an earlier accident, but Leandra had disobeyed the order, and the attackers had seized Leandra's prototype. Lone Wolf resolves to rescue the prototype, and Leandra disobeys direct orders by following him.

Lone Wolf and Leandra trace the Darklands forces to a Shianti temple where the relics came from, learning that Shianti crystals have healing properties, but prolonged reliance on that healing causes one to become dependent on it, with fatal consequences if one leaves the crystals. Lone Wolf and Leandra encounter Ceratar, the brother of Vonotar, in the temple. Ceratar helps them pass a room filled with poisonous gas, potentially dying in the process. They eventually discover that the prototype is being ferried to V'taag, a tower at the border between Sommerlund and the Darklands. Lone Wolf sets off to infiltrate the tower, while Leandra seemingly betrays the mission by joining the Darkland forces.

Fighting his way up the tower, Lone Wolf eventually encounters Gunzar, the Drakkarim commander of the tower. The two duel, but as Lone Wolf was on the verge of winning, Gunzar blasts Lone Wolf with a Shianti amulet and knocks him unconscious. Gunzar imprisons Lone Wolf, and summons Darklord Haakon to inspect the prototype. Lone Wolf manages to escape from his cell and retrieve the Sommerswerd. Ascending the tower again, Lone Wolf finds a severely wounded Leandra, who had decided that she was at fault for the entire affair since her decision to continue working on Shianti relics led to the attack on Rockstarn. She had decided to bluff the Darkland forces to gain access to the prototype, and thus destroy it. She had not, however, accounted for the mental powers of Vordaks, and had been tortured as a result. Lone Wolf forgives her and duels Gunzar once more, this time killing the Drakkar with a surge of the Sommerswerd's power just as Haakon arrives from Helgedad. The prototype is destroyed in the explosion as well. Lone Wolf and Leandra then return to Rockstarn.
