Lone Wolf

Journeyman is the eighth Kai rank after Guardian, alongside Warmarn.

Training[]

On average, for a Kai warrior possessing the innate potential to become a Kai Grand Master, a Journeyman would be age 20 to 22. If a Guardian failed to reach Journeyman or Warmarn by age 22, their Kai potential was tested; those that were found to not have the latent potential to reach Kai Grand Master were offered to be released from their vows and given vocational education to resume their life outside of the Kai Monastery, as well as the title of Kai Virin.[1]

Promoted Guardians were split into two ranks: Journeyman or Warmarn. Journeyman specialises in scouting and diplomacy, whereas Warmarn specialises in military duties. The Guardian's next path was chosen by the Kai Monastery. In rare cases, some Kai even held both ranks.[1] Journeymen were sent abroad to gather information about the lands bordering Sommerlund.[2]

For those that reached Journeyman, the next rank is Savant, typically reached two to four years later.[3]

In the gamebooks[]

In the Kai series, completing three gamebooks promotes the reader to Journeyman or Warmarn. The earliest this can be played as, and canonically for Lone Wolf, is The Chasm of Doom. It grants three extra Kai Disciplines, for a total of eight. It is not stated which split rank Lone Wolf or the player picked, and in any case, there is no longer a Kai Order to pick his route.

"A Kai lord is expected to achieve a certain rank by the first (or only) age listed. At the second age listed for Guardians, Warmarn/Journeymen, Archmasters, and Kai Grand Masters, any Kai that have not achieved that rank are tested to see if they even can do so.

If their connection to the Gift of the Kai is insufficient to allow further advancement, they are not expelled from the Order automatically (and can stay forever as they've rightly earned) but they are also given a chance to become Kai Virin without any dishonor attached to it.

This is separate from the Initiate 'test'. If a Kai Lord cannot manifest five disciplines by age 16, they are usually released from the Order and their vows, given the title of Kai Virin, and provided training elsewhere in Sommerlund so they can excel at whatever vocation they choose.

(On whether they are expelled) No. They are offered the chance of becoming a Kai Virin. They are not expelled then or ever BUT, human nature being what it is, ambition can be an ugly thing. Thus, they are offered an out so that they do not have to stay while knowing they can never advance to Grand Master."
