The Imperial Emirate of Kakush, commonly referred to as Kakush, is a country in Northern Magnamund. Its capital is Nikesa.

History[]

Kakush was founded by a nomadic Vassa tribe called the Kakushi in MS 4301. Breaking with nomadic tradition, they constructed a permanent settlement in south-western Vassagonia.[3] True independence, however, has not yet been secured from Vassagonia. It is able to secure autonomy through a close ally in Dessi to counterbalance Vassagonia, and abundant natural resources.[5]

Over the years, the Vassagonian Empire began to encroach on Kakush, whittling away its border with raids. The border was once straightforward between the two, but now is fragmented.[5] In MS 4780, Vassagonia seemed poised to annex Kakush entirely, but as Dessi stood ready to defend Kakush. On the eve of the attack the Vassagonian Zakhan called off the assault, with rumours suggesting that a border nation between Vassagonia and the Elder Magi of Dessi was preferable.[5]

In MS 5061, during the events of The Cauldron of Fear, Kakush marched to help their allies in Anari against Zakhan Kimah of Vassagonia. Lone Wolf, in Tahou seeking the Lorestone of Tahou, defeated Kimah, breaking the siege of Tahou and forcing Vassagonia back.

For the remainder of the Darklands War, Kakush's location allowed it to remain secure for a while, but the Darklords, possessing the Tanoz-tukor (allowing them to operate freely outside of the Darklands), inevitably made ground in their conquests. In MS 5065, Darklords Tomogh and Khatellu prepared to invade Dessi, and Kakush, Firalond and Lourden became its first line of defence.[6] Tomogh took control of an artifact used to revive the comatose Lord Ardan, and empowered himself and his army, which easily overran these countries, and struck deep into Dessi.[7] Tomogh's conquest was broken when Lone Wolf slew Archlord Gnaag and destroyed the Transfusor powering the Tanoz-tukor, destroying Tomogh.

In MS 5102, the Shomazgaar Horde arose beneath the Tahou Cauldron in Anari. The Elder Magi pressed the Anari Republic, Kakush, and Lourden to help defeat the Horde before it could gain a foothold deep underneath Magnamund.[8]

Geography[]

Kakush is located in the south-east of Northern Magnamund, where the desert meets the plains. It shares a contested, messy border with Vassagonia to the north and north-east. To the south-east lies Dessi, and to its west lies Valerion and Firalond. To the north lies Anari.

The south-western border is demarcated by mountains, with the Nikesa pass traversing the Kakush Uplands from Nikesa to Bazani in Firalond, and the Eagle Trail through the Vluni Peaks to Lamoas in Dessi. The northern border is known as the Sour Hills. The border with Vassagonia drives deep into Kakush towards the west, forcing Kakush into a narrow piece of land from Nikesa to Bidah, and a path following the Southern Chah Range to the northernmost city of Dan. The River Chah demarcates Kakush's north-western border.

Kakush possesses abundant natural resources throughout the land, allowing it to secure a degree of safety.[5]

Volko berries are native to Kakush.[9]

Politics[]

Kakush is an Emirate. The sole known leader is Emir Chotan, ruling since MS 5000.[5]

Economy[]

Kakush possesses abundant natural resources and strong allies willing to help keep a free market port open outside of Vassagonia. Close ties with Dessi mean that Kakush supplies the Elder Magi with agricultural products and rare minerals at extremely low prices, in exchange for Dessi protecting its territory and teaching its schools in magic.[5]

Demographics[]

Kakush is part of the Vassa nations. Its population was 76,000 in MS 5050.[1]

In the gamebooks[]

Kakush is not visited in the gamebooks. However, various people from Kakush are sporadically encountered.
