The Lakuri Isles are an archipelago of eight islands in the Kuri Sea off the coast of Durenor and Vassagonia. It was home to pirates under Captain Khadro, who terrorised the ships around the neighbouring countries of Durenor, Cloeasia and Vassagonia. It is well-protected by the unforgiving Bukimi Channel, preventing assaults by sea.
In MS 5077, during the events of The Skull of Agarash, Khadro captured Lord Rimoah using the power of the Skull of Agarash, revealed to him by a Nadziran of Bukimi. Lone Wolf set out to rescue him, where Khadro was slain during the conflict, and the Skull of Agarash destroyed.
History[]
The Lakuri Isles were settled by Vassa outlaws, corsairs and rogues expelled from the Durenese peninsula after the arrival of the Ulnarian in MS 2819. They set up a series of shanty towns on the main isles of the archipelago. With active volcanoes, no fertile soil, and no notable fauna, piracy became their only means of survival, and the Lakuri Isles became notorious for some of the bloodiest pirates in all of Magnamund.[4]
In MS 4190, the Lakuri Fleet was united under Cutlass Vhar, the most violent Lakuri captain ever. His campaigns were so savage, legend has it that their sails were stained red with the blood of their victims. Vhar was slain by a cutlass wielded by a Shadakine raider named Shuval, but such was notoriety, the the Lakuri ships were coloured red in his honour. Named the Crimson Fleet, it continued to terrorise the coasts of the Kuri Sea for centuries, taking no survivors on their raids. The Crimson Fleet usually remains in the Kuri Sea, but has been known to sail as far south as the Gulf of Tentarium, and as far north as the Gulf of Durenor. They rarely sail north, however, due to the might of the Durenese and Sommlending navies.[4]
In MS 5050, during the events of Fire on the Water, the Lakuri Pirates may have allied themselves with the Darklords in an attempt to foil Lone Wolf's quest to acquire the Sommerswerd in Durenor. The pirates attacked the Durenor as it sailed towards Hammerdal,[5] with a Drakkar onboard.[6]
The base on Kita Cove is heavily-fortified, able to withstand heavy assault. It has withstood multiple attacks by Durenese and Vassagonian fleets over the years, amongst others. It was finally destroyed by the Durenese during the Darklands War, although the site still functions as a natural harbour, allowing the remnants of the pirates to survive.[4]
In MS 5077, during the events of The Skull of Agarash, a Nadziran of Bukimi, who once served Darklord Menashga, sought vengeance over Lone Wolf, responsible for his master's death during the Darklands War. Naar took notice of this Nadziran's efforts, and guided him to the Skull of Agarash, located on Bukimi Island. This Nadziran seized control over the Island, and corrupted Captain Khadro, leader of the remnants of the pirates on the Lakuri Isles. The Nadziran offered Khadro the power of the Skull, in exchange for capturing Lord Rimoah. Lone Wolf would be sure to rescue Rimoah, leading Lone Wolf into a trap.[7]
Lone Wolf journeyed to the port of Kadan, where the Nadziran, under the guise of Azara, had infiltrated the men of Mazrah, whose sons Khadro had slain. Azara led Lone Wolf to Mazrah, where it was agreed that Mazrah would take his fleet and Lone Wolf to destroy Khadro once and for all, and rescue Lord Rimoah. Many of Mazrah's men were lost, but they managed to breach Khadro's encampment. Lone Wolf fought and slew the Nadziran, but was bound by the power of the Skull of Agarash, wielded by Khadro. As Khadro moved in for the killing blow, he was slain by Mazrah. Lone Wolf then destroyed the Skull with the Sommerswerd, releasing Lord Rimoah from his confinement. Lone Wolf, Rimoah, Mazrah and the remnants of his men then escaped Bukimi Island with Khadro's loot, which Mazrah kept.[2]
Geography[]
The Lakuri Isles are an archipelago of eight major islands and multiple smaller ones, in the middle of the Kuri Sea. They are about one hundred and fifty metres from west-to-east. It is surrounded by multiple major maritime routes connecting the Lastlands and other nations, including the treacherous Bukimi Channel which bisects Kita Cove and the islets of Nori and Ize.[4]
The eight major islands are, from west-to-east, Bukimi, Z'pao, Tla-Sia, Lato, Mrumbi, Koz, Dashet, and Tofaz. Bukimi, Lato, Mrumbi and Dasheti possess active volcanoes. Impenetrable jungles cover the islands, preventing most major settlements from being created. The islands also possess little fertile soil.[4]
Politics[]
The Lakuri Isles are led by a pirate captain at Kita Cove.
Known rulers of the Lakuri Isles[]
Economy[]
The Lakuri Isles are a hostile terrain, lacking in notable fauna and natural resources. As such, piracy is the main way that the pirates of the Lakuri Isles survive.[4]
In Lone Wolf media[]
The Lakuri Isles are the main setting of The Skull of Agarash. In this graphical novel, Lord Rimoah is captured by Captain Khadro, using the power of the Skull of Agarash, granted by a Nadziran of Bukimi. Lone Wolf journeys to Kadan to seek out information on how to infiltrate the Lakuri Isles, where he meets Mazrah, who agrees to journey to the Bukimi Isles with his men, despite the dangers, as Khadro was responsible for the death of his sons. The quest was difficult, costing Mazrah many of his men, but the Nadziran and Khadro were slain, the Skull of Agarash destroyed by the Sommerswerd, and Lord Rimoah rescued.[2]
The player also passes by the Lakuri Isles in Voyage of the Moonstone, aboard The Pride of Sommerlund. The player will encounter pirate ships, and if the player lacks Grand Huntmastery, will spot them too late and will come under attack.[8] If they do, then the ship will evade at full speed, but encounter a whirlpool, summoned by sorcery, instead.[9]. If the player is attacked by pirates, they will defeat them, then enter Kita Cove.[10] If the player possesses Kai-alchemy, they will Sense Evil and escape,[11] but if not, they may explore the Cove and discover an Iron Skull.[12] This Iron Skull can be sold later for money.[13] The Iron Skull can also be used to enter a Vakeros village in Elzian — if given to the Elder, it will be revealed as an evil artifact.[14]
