Ljuk is the nominal capital of Kalte. Ikaya is where the seat of power resides amongst the Ice Barbarians, although Ljuk is where most human trading activity takes place. Ljuk is pronounced ‘Le Yook’.[1]
The only contact the ice barbarians have with the rest of Magnamund is at the trading post in Ljuk. In summer, when the ice around Ljuk has melted, they travel to the city to trade their furs for weapons and tools they cannot make themselves, as wood and iron do not exist naturally in the lands of Kalte. These Barbarians harbor a deep hatred for all other peoples and mercilessly kill anyone who ventures into their icy domain.
History[]
Ljuk was founded in MS 3952 by travellers and explorers seeking treasure in the north. The nomadic Ice Barbarians tolerate this begrudgingly, despite shunning the south, as they are able to export furs and gems in exchange for steel and other materials they cannot obtain themselves.[2]
In MS 5100, the Ice Barbarians seized Ljuk, and destroyed the crews of the ships docked there. Tvor'tana managed to unite the disparate chiefs of the north, awoke the Ice Demons (causing an unnatural winter and the Kaltersee to freeze over), and invaded Sommerlund and Durenor. However, Kalte was defeated and driven back, and the unnatural winter eventually thawed over.[3][4]
