The Lore-circles are four schools of learning within the Magnakai Disciplines. Each school of learning teaches a group of related Magnakai disciplines, and mastering all of them granted a power higher than they would have had individually, and far beyond a mortal's capabilities.[1]
Within the Kai Monastery of Sommerlund, there were individual Lore Halls for each Lore-circle. The Lore Halls of Spirit, Light and Fire were located beneath the Kai Master's Hall but above the Grand Hall, whilst the Lore Hall of Solaris was located on the ground floor.[2]
Lore-circles[]
In the gamebooks, this is interpreted as granting bonuses to Combat Skill and Endurance. There are also a few sections in the Magnakai series where the text asks if the reader has completed an entire Lore-circle, instead of asking for each discipline.
In the Definitive Editions of the books, the Circles of Light and Solaris were improved.
Lore-circle | Disciplines | Bonuses | Quote[3] | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Original Edition | Definitive Edition | |||
Circle of Fire | Weaponmastery and Huntmastery | +1 Combat Skill, +2 Endurance | Truth is the fire that forges us anew. Only through the honest hunt can we grow and thrive. | |
Circle of Light | Animal Control and Curing | +0 Combat Skill, +3 Endurance | +0 Combat Skill, +4 Endurance | Life is simple; only the burden of our higher mind makes it difficult. Let go and touch the world as it is. |
Circle of Solaris | Invisibility, Huntmastery and Pathsmanship | +1 Combat Skill, +3 Endurance | +2 Combat Skill, +3 Endurance | Between light and dark, all life can be found. See what cannot be seen and you will find your way. |
Circle of the Spirit | Psi-Surge, Psi-Screen, Nexus and Divination | +3 Combat Skill, +3 Endurance | Only by accepting that you can never understand anything will everything finally be revealed. |
History[]
In MS 3799, the names of the Lore-circles made an appearance in a prophecy to Archlord Vashna, the day before the Battle of Moytura Pass:
Fire’s circle will burn away the spawn of darkness.
Light shall fill the far places and reveal the truth.
The ring of Solaris will encircle the Eye,
And the Spirit will prove stronger than any shadow.
In MS 4434, the Book of the Magnakai was stolen from the Kai Monastery. This caused the progress of the Kai to slow dramatically, as the knowledge was slowly forgotten, and this period was known as the "Lost Years". To compensate for this, Kai Grand Master Grey Wolf eventually created the Lore-circles in MS 4771.[4]
Notable achievements[]
Kai Grand Master Blazer was the youngest-known Kai Lord to master the Lore-circle of Fire. His Kai name is derived from this achievement, as well as an unknown unfortunate "incident" known only to himself and the people of Rockstarn.[5]
