The Swamp of Maakenmire, also known as the Maakenmire Swamp or simply the Maakenmire, is a swamp in Northern Magnamund. It is inhabited by the Kwaraz, Gourgaz and several other hostile reptiles. Formerly a lush grassland, an earthquake tore open the land, and Naar's power corrupted it, and an unnamed Darklord later took control of the swamp.
History[]
Before the Maakenmire Swamp, the land was a lush grassland. In MS 3055, earthquakes tore open the area, and a tributary from the Nengud-kor-Adez flowed underground, providing the source of corruption that would doom the land. The earthquakes created a vast bowl of land that sunk below sea level, tapping into the power of the Nengud-kor-Adez.[3] By MS 3600, mutants began to emerge from the Maakenmire, such as the first Gourgaz. This drew the attention of an unnamed Darklord, who commissioned the construction of the island fortress of V'Ka. V'Ka took more than a century to complete, and cost the lives of many of the Giak slaves involved in its construction.[2]
After the death of the Darklords, during the events of Slaves of the Mire, Autumn Snow attempted to retrieve the Book of Vashna before the forces of Darkness could use it.[4]
Geography[]
The Maakenmire is a dangerous swamp full of dangerous reptiles. It is located south of the Wildlands, west of Cloeasia and Vassagonia, north of Casiorn and east of Sommerlund.
The corruption that created the Maakenmire lingers, even millennia after its creation.[5]

The Maakenmire is the setting of Slaves of the Mire. The player, as Autumn Snow (a member of the New Order of the Kai) attempts to retrieve the Book of Vashna before the forces of Darkness can use it.[4]
The Maakenmire is also the setting of the fourth adventure of Terror of the Darklords. In this RPG sub-adventure, the party pursues Svader and his minions to V'Ka, where they will discover Svader's plan to summon Darklord Vashna from the Maakengorge, in a ritual involving the skull of Sun Eagle and the blood of a Kai Master (the party's teacher, Stormsong).[18]
