The Island Principalities of Mhytan are a country in Southern Magnamund, and formerly part of the Vaduzhan Empire. It is a seafaring nation skilled in diplomacy, taking advantage of its relatively-isolated location at sea, keeping it away from Shadaki politics.
History[]
Mhytan was formerly part of the Vaduzhan Empire.[3] After becoming independent, it monopolised passage through the Chai Sea, initially drawing hostilities from Chai, until a deal was worked out where Mhytan would offer preferential assistance and access to Chai, in exchange for peace and a cut of trade profits. This was one example where Mhytan used diplomacy over warfare, and became a strategy employed by the Princes of Mhytan, leading to it becoming incredibly prosperous.[4]
In Mhytan's early years, the area became politically-unstable, and the arrival of water-based Agarashi, preying on ships, led to mistaken tensions with Mhytan. However, the misunderstanding was eventually diffused.[4]
In MS 5085, Autarch Sejanoz of Bhanar was slain, and his empire collapsed. Chai, the victim of his aggression in the last few years, counter-attacked deep into Bhanar. Khea-khan Xo-lin of Chai passed away, and his remaining son, Zha-zhing, became Khea-khan. He married Princess Myelsha of Mhytan, and the two countries signed the Chai Sea Treaty, barring Bhanarian shipping from entering the Chai Sea, blockading Bhanar. By MS 5087, the Bhanarian resistance collapsed, and Zha-zhing installed a puppet, Overseer Klutan, on the throne of Bhanar. Over time, however, Klutan lost control of Bhanar, and King Kardisa of Vaduzhan invaded, claiming it as part of the former Vaduzhan Empire.[5]
In MS 5103, during the events of The Dusk of Eternal Night, Autarchess Balerodah, widow of Sejanoz, invited Kardisa to Otavai, to crown him as the new Emperor of the reformed Vaduzhan Empire. Mythenian diplomats attended this ceremony, and with Balerodah's mind charms, cheered on Kardisa, despite his ambitions inevitably leading to conflict with Mhytan.[3]
Geography[]
Mhytan is made up of the mainland peninsula, plus a surrounding archipelago, on the south of Southern Magnamund. Its peninsula is connected to Vaduzhan in the west, and its islands shield the Chai Sea from the Mythenian Sea. A mountain range dominates the peninsula.
Politics[]
Mhytan is a principality, ruled by a Prince.
Known rulers of Mhytan[]
Economy[]
Mhytan is a wealthy trading nation, taking advantage of its location, isolating it somewhat from Shadaki politics. It exports shipbuilding, fish, silver, copper, and spices.[1]
Demographics[]
The native population of Mhytan is part of the Mythenish people.[2] The early settlers settled in present-day Mhytan, Vaduzhan, Chai, Bhanar, and certain cities in Lissan. They share a degree of history with the Tianese people, who settled in the south-east of Southern Magnamund.[1]
The term should not be confused with "Mythenian", which refers to something belonging to the country of Mhytan, such as the Mythenian Sea.
In the gamebooks[]
Mhytan is not visited in the gamebooks, although it is mentioned in passing, particularly in The Dusk of Eternal Night, should the player choose to explore Otavai.[6]
Design[]
The spelling of "Mhytan" and its denonyms are inconsistent throughout Lone Wolf media. According to Vincent Lazzari, the correct terms are:[2]

The Mythenish people gave birth to the countries of Mhytan, Vaduzhan, Chai and Bhanar + cities in Lissan. Everything related to Mhytan is called "Mythenian", including the sea..
