Orlo Tanaak, dubbed The Province of Slaves, was a Darklands realm, located on the northern coast. It housed Aarnak, one of the most important fortresses in the Darklands, and its most dependable northern port.

It only appears in the first edition of The Darklands. In the second edition, it was renamed Iznogdazokim, with slightly-different properties.

Geography[]

Orlo Taanak was located on the northern coast of the Darklands, overlooking the Aarnak Estuary, leading to the Kaltersee. The land was tainted by Naar, a curse that granted its inhabitants a permanent state of hopelessness. This made Orlo Taanak extremely useful to house slaves, and it had taken the mantle of the clearing house for the Darklands' slave traffic. Its climate was cold, covered in icy wastes.[1]

Its sole fortress was Aarnak. No fortresses were required to keep the slaves under control, due to the curse. The curse also protected Orlo Taanak from invasion by the Freelands to its eastern coast.[1]

Politics[]

Rule of Orlo Taanak was a prestigious position. Its first ruler was Darklord Haakon.[2] At an unknown date, some time before the time of Archlord Zagarna, Darklord Unc took control. Unc, however, was politically-inept, although not as much so as to stop the flow of slaves to Helgedad. Unc occasionally gave some slaves an antidote to the curse, then forced them to fight in the gladiatorial pits of Aarnak. Under Unc's rule, Jorr, a former human slave, ran day-to-day operations.[1]

After the death of Darklord Haakon, Darklords Ghurch and Unc fought for control. However, this civil war was orchestrated by Darklord Gnaag in secret. At the height of the civil war, Gnaag destroyed both Ghurch and Unc in a colossal show of power. After Unc's death, Orlo Taanak was granted to Darklord Zhanshal.[3] Later, Gnaag forced Zhanshal to employ Kadharian as the Slavemaster of Aarnak.[4]

Orlo Taanak's history was largely tied in with Aarnak's, as its main fortress.

Design[]

Orlo Taanak makes its sole appearance in the first edition of The Darklands.[1] This was retconned in the second edition, with the domain renamed Iznogdazokim, with most of the characteristics kept intact.[5] One notable difference is that Iznogdazokim lacks the Aura of Hopelessness that helps keeps slaves pliable.
