Appearance[]
He is a strongly-built man, with broad shoulders. He is considered handsome with sharp, almost hawkish features. Biography[]
Captain D'Val is the captain of the King's Guard of Sommerlund, and is frequently dispatched by King Ulnar V against the forces of evil, and to help Lone Wolf in his quests.
In MS 5050, during the events of Fire on the Water, he led Lone Wolf to the Royal Armoury to help him prepare on his quest to obtain the Sommerswerd,[2] and delivered him to the Green Sceptre ship that would take him to Durenor.[3]
In MS 5054, during the events of The Chasm of Doom, Barraka's forces invaded Ruanon, and Captain D'Val was sent to investigate. His forces fought Barraka's, but they were outnumbered, and D'Val's forces were pinned down for a month in Ruanon, together with Baron Oren Vanalund.[4] If the player found D'Val's Sword, Lone Wolf returned it to him.[5] After fending off another attack by Barraka's men,[6] he helped re-equip Lone Wolf on his mission to recover Oren's daughter, Madelon, from being sacrificed by Barraka to revive Darklord Vashna and his army of the dead, which Lone Wolf was successful in.
In MS 5077, during the events of The Deathlord of Ixia, Lone Wolf set off on a quest to Ixia to defeat Deathlord Ixiataaga and his forces. During the events of Dawn of the Dragons, Naar took advantage of Lone Wolf's absence to open a Shadow Gate near the Kai Monastery and send an army of Lavas to destroy it. Despite multiple attempts to break the siege, the forces of Sommerlund had failed.[7] However, Lone Wolf returned to Sommerlund managed to return to Sommerlund in haste, and in a council with King Ulnar V and his councilors, vowed to destroy the Shadow Gate using a Sun-crystal given by the Elder Magi. Captain D'Val was sent to guide Lone Wolf to the weakest point of the enemy's line to break Lone Wolf through to reach the Kai Monastery.[8] This was successful, although Lone Wolf was forced to abandon Captain D'Val, fighting a losing battle against the Lavas.[9] Although Lone Wolf successfully destroyed the Shadow Gate, it is unknown if Captain D'Val survived.
In the gamebooks[]
Captain D'Val is encountered in Fire on the Water, The Chasm of Doom, and Dawn of the Dragons. He is a background character in all three books.
In The Chasm of Doom, Lone Wolf can obtain D'Val's Sword from an actor in the Asajir Players traveling troubadour group, which in turn can be returned to Captain D'Val later in the book. This has no gameplay impact. The inscription on his sword reveals his full name and title: "Captain Remir D'Val — King's Guard Regiment".[10]
