Scion-kai is the eighth Kai Master rank and the seventeenth Kai rank overall, after Mentora.
Training[]
Scion-kai reaching this rank have mastered eight Magnakai Disciplines, as well as all ten Kai Disciplines.
On average, for a Kai warrior possessing the innate potential to become a Kai Grand Master, a Scion-kai would be age 50. The next rank is Archmaster, typically reached two to four years later.[1] If a Scion-kai failed to reach Archmaster by 54, their Kai potential was tested; those that were found to not have the latent potential to reach Kai Grand Master were offered to be released from their vows and given vocational education to resume their life outside of the Kai Monastery, as well as the title of Kai Virin.[2] However, it was very rare for a Kai Master to not have the potential to reach Kai Grand Master.[3]
Improved Magnakai Disciplines[]
Scion-kai have improved Magnakai Disciplines over their original, initial mastery of them:[4]
- Weaponmastery
- Scion-kai may add 4 points (instead of the usual 3 points) to their Combat Skill in combat.
- Scion-kai lose only 1 point from their Combat Skill when fighting unarmed.
- Invisibility
- Scion-kai are able to alter their physical appearance at will in order to deceive an enemy. The duration and effectiveness of this deception increases as a Kai Master rises in rank.
- Pathsmanship
- Scion-kai are able to converse with any sentient creature.
- Scion-kai are able to make themselves invisible from psychic or magical detection spells.
- Psi-screen
- Scion-kai are able to absorb and control some of the hostile energies directed at them. This includes deflecting the energy to reduce damage, or absorb it to increase the power of their own psychic attacks.
- Divination
- Scion-kai are able to spirit walk: The ability to leave their body in a state of suspended animation and, in spirit form, explore their immediate surroundings unhindered by physical limitations. The length of time a Kai Master can spirit walk increases as he rises in rank.
- When the spirit is separated from the body in this fashion, the body remains inanimate and vulnerable to attack. If a Kai Master's body is killed whilst he is spirit walking, his spiritual self will also cease to exist, and vice versa.
In the gamebooks[]
In the gamebooks, the player reaches Scion-kai after completing five Magnakai gamebooks. The earliest this can be played as, and canonically for Lone Wolf, is during The Prisoners of Time.

At the second age listed for Guardians, Warmarn/Journeymen, Archmasters, and Kai Grand Masters, any Kai that have not achieved that rank are tested to see if they even can do so.
If their connection to the Gift of the Kai is insufficient to allow further advancement, they are not expelled from the Order automatically (and can stay forever as they've rightly earned) but they are also given a chance to become Kai Virin without any dishonor attached to it.
This is separate from the Initiate 'test'. If a Kai Lord cannot manifest five disciplines by age 16, they are usually released from the Order and their vows, given the title of Kai Virin, and provided training elsewhere in Sommerlund so they can excel at whatever vocation they choose.
(On whether they are expelled) No. They are offered the chance of becoming a Kai Virin. They are not expelled then or ever BUT, human nature being what it is, ambition can be an ugly thing. Thus, they are offered an out so that they do not have to stay while knowing they can never advance to Grand Master." - ↑ On Kai Masters becoming Kai Virin in #the-lore-hall of The World of LONE WOLF – August Hahn on Discord, 2024-10-04.(On whether failed Kai Grand Masters would be forced to become Kai Virin): "Gods no. They don't have to be Virin or retire at all. It's just an option made to them. In practice it virtually never comes up because any Kai capable of becoming a Master is very unlikely to not be able to achieve Grand Master."
