Demonlord Shom'zaa, sometimes referred to as the Shom'zaa (with an article) or simply Shom'zaa,[note 1] is a Child of Agarash. He is the main antagonist of The Fall of Blood Mountain, where Grand Master is sent to slay him and stop his revival.

Appearance[]

An illustration of Shom'zaa is available in The Fall of Blood Mountain, ยง91.

Shom'zaa is a four legged dragon that has a triangular head and two pale green radiant eyes set above a three cornered mouth filled with crystalline teeth. Below its jaw protrudes a slender proboscis, from its crown of bony skull sprout antenna tipped with barbed spikes and slime drips from every pore. It injects fluid into the egg from the proboscis to encourage them to hatch.[1]

It has a sonic cry beyond range of human hearing to alert Agarashi.

History[]

Shom'zaa, as a Child of Agarash, was one of Agarash's lieutenants during the Age of Eternal Night. Each Child was born with a fragment of its creator's power, and Shom'zaa was invested with his mastery over the power of Chaos.[2] Shom'zaa was responsible for creating many of the common Agarashi breeds created in Magnamund, without the power of a Doomstone, in contrast to his fellow Siblings who could spawn only one kind of creature.[3]

Alongside his minions, Shom'zaa was imprisoned by the Elder Magi, deep under the ground of the land of Bor, below a layer of Korlinium.[4][3] Despite being trapped, Shom'zaa was sustained by a connection to the Plane of Darkness, where he could draw energy from.[5]

In MS 5084, during the events of The Fall of Blood Mountain, Shom'zaa was accidentally-reawakened by dwarven diggers under Bor Crown Prince Leomin, despite dwarf lore forbidding such deep mining, due to greed. Shom'zaa quickly created a lair and began to attack Bor underground, even reaching the Throne Chamber of Bor, which housed a powerful gem that allowed dwarves to grow crops deep underground.[4]

Fearing Shom'zaa's awakening could have provided a foothold for evil to return, Lone Wolf sent Grand Master to defeat Shom'zaa. Grand Master was successful in their quest, defeating Shom'zaa using a Sun-crystal given by the Elder Magi.[6]

In the gamebooks[]

Shom'zaa is encountered towards the end of The Fall of Blood Mountain, although Grand Master will face a gauntlet of Shom'zaa Agarashi afterwards as they try to escape.

If Grand Master is successful in throwing the Sun-crystal at Shom'zaa (requiring a high Random Number Table roll: 10-30% chance to succeed, depending on Endurance), Shom'zaa will be defeated instantly. If not, or if Grand Master attempts to find a better position to throw the Sun-crystal, Shom'zaa will be fought in combat.

Notes[]

  1. โ†‘ In The Fall of Blood Mountain, Shom'zaa is referred to as "the Shom'zaa", with "the" as an article in the introduction. However, in the gamebook sections, "Shom'zaa" alone is most common. On the other hand, in Bestiary of the Beyond, he is given the title "Demonlord" in some places in the text.
