A potion of Rannaluve (+1CS when using Mindblast), Lorsan's Bow (+3 RNT, equivalent to the Silver Bow of Duadon) and a Korlinium Mace (+2 CS, Special Item) are the unique items found in this adventure.

A Zejar-dulaga can also be acquired.

Getting started[]

Useful items from previous gamebooks[]

Special Items[]
  1. Shield (+2 CS)
  2. Psychic Diadem (+1CS when using Mindblast)
  3. Padded Leather Waistcoat (+2 END)
  4. Chainmail Waistcoat (+4 END)
  5. Helmet (+2 END)
  6. Rune Sabre (+2CS, Short Sword type)
  7. Blue-Steel Sword (+2CS, Sword type)
  8. Vakeros Axe (+1CS, Axe type)
  9. Quiver
  10. Blue Crystal Talisman
  11. Lizard Ring

That makes 11 Special Items (aka nearly the max limit) but please note that the Lizard Ring is not needed if you master Animal Kinship, in this walkthrough. Moreover, if you do not master the New Order battle Skill Dual Wielding :

  • You may keep only the magical weapon you are proficient with (see Weaponskill), if there is.
  • If there is no magical weapon you are proficient with, you may keep only one magical weapon. It would have the same CS bonus (+2), but magical.
Weapons[]
  1. Superior Weapon with Sharpened Blade (weapon, +1 damage inflicted in every round of combat)
  2. Yew Bow from Durenor (+1 RNT)

Please note the latter (bow) is disposable, a better Bow will soon be found (Special Item).

Backpack Items[]
  1. Yabari Ointment
  2. Oede Herb

Suggested Disciplines[]

The suggested setup is:

  1. Weaponskill
  2. Healing
  3. Mindblast
  4. Animal Kinship
  5. Mindshield
  6. Mind over Matter
  7. Hunting (or Camouflage)

Prevent a fight : Sixth Sense, Hunting, Mindblast, Animal Kinship.

Suggested Equipment[]

  • If needed : Chainmail Waistcoat (+4 END), Shield (+2 CS).
  • Potions of Alether and Laumspur (always useful).
  • A Superior Quality Weapon (+1 CS): Axe, Rapier, Short Sword or Spear.[1]
  • A Compass if you do not have Tracking.
  • 2 Meals if you do not have Hunting.
  • A Single Person Tent (takes 2 spaces in your Backpack) if you can and if missing.
  • Do not take a Sword: you can get one for free soon (157). Same for Bow and Quiver.
  • Rope is not needed.

Walkthrough[]

Optional lore sections are in italic.

From Ragadorn to Maakenmire Swamp[]

1 : follow Athania inside and buy some vials for yourself (150) : a potion of Rannaluve, an Empty Vial, a Yabari Balm (if you do not already have Yabari Ointment), an Ampule of Lyx (if you do not have Oede Herb).

157 : take 2 Meals, and the Sword if needed. You can also take the Tinderbox (useless but it does not count as a Backpack Item).

304 : ride toward Izzahi (333), visit the farm (254). Use Healing (or a Potion of Laumspur) (2) and immediately follow these prints into the forest (312). Fight KRAAN & GIAK (CS = 19 / END = 26), Endurance points losses halved. Get (60) Lorsan's Bow and a full Quiver !!

34 : Healing allowed. Eat a Meal.

44 : Healing allowed. Ride straight toward the edge of the forest (188).

Mirewoods[]

188 : Sixth Sense or Hunting prevent a fight against a SWAMP GIAK (CS = 11 / E = 13). Then (106 or 111) use a Bow+Arrow (231) and fight a SWAMP GIAK (CS = 10 / E = 10).

31 : flee (83) and fight another SWAMP GIAK (CS = 11 / E = 12). Then (270) prefer to leave this place and trust Athania to find you again (165). Apply your Yabari Balm or Yabari Ointment.

165 : do not wish to risk encountering the creature responsible (187). With Tracking (326) or a Compass (93), head in a north-west direction (342).

342 : eat a meal or use Hunting. Animal Kinship (242) or the Lizard Ring (164 then 16) avoid to fight a KWARAZ (CS = 21 / E = 29) doubly vulnerable to Mindblast.

285 : choose a dry islet at the foot of a tree which you can turn into a makeshift bed (256). Healing allowed and restore 2 more Endurance points with a Single-Person Tent.

Obsidian Prism and Gourgaz Village[]

96 : eat a meal. Flee without delay (142).

  • If you have Camouflage : stay in the strip of forest at the foot of the Maaken range (295), and hide in these bushes (125) to get an Obsidian Prism.
  • Otherwise take refuge deep in the swamp itself (130).

130 : pick a number from the RNT :

  • 0 or 9 (281): do not trouble yourself with these unknown remains (97). See below.
  • 1 or 8 (268): continue your journey without paying attention to it (3). Fight a GROKKU (CS = 12 / E = 20). Then (24) Mind Over Matter (227) lets you gathering 3 Meals and 2 Endurance Points.
  • 2 or 7 (97): Having applied Yabari on your skin prevents CS penalty.
  • 3 or 6 (306): Mindblast (145) prevents a fight against a SUGGUTH (CS = 8 / E = 32). Then (24) see above.
  • 4 or 5 (215): cross the pond (40) and have a single combat round against a MARSHVIPER (CS = 14 / E = 7). If you do not kill the Viper (255), you die if you do not have Tahglo Mushrooms (from AS01) or Oede Herb or Lyx Antivenom. Then (24) see above.

134 : Tracking (166) or not,

  • You already have an Obsidian Prism : bypass the village to the right (252). Bypass the yellowish lake (68) : Healing allowed. Then (124), Animal Kinship helps avoid a fight against a MAAKEN MUD BOA (CS = 12 / E = 38).
  • You do not have an Obsidian Prism : skirt it to the left (21) and (140) follow the strange flagstone path (348). Visit this gloomy building (211) to get an Obsidian Prism (Special Item), then (27) take the left path (158), go right (322), force your way through (153) and have an easy fight against CRUPULUS (CS = 11 / E = 38). Then (71) : the choice does not matter ; Healing allowed.

Shanibelle[]

38 or 66 : escape with the teenage girl (258). Use Healing or a restoring potion on her (29).

299 : the choice does not matter.

316 or (52 then 319) : Healing allowed. And recover 2 more Endurance points. A Spyglass (and Sixth Sense) provide a few intel.

237 : insert the Obsidian Prism in the cavity (311), erase it from the Action Chart. Venture into the pyramid (58), grant her this whim (238). Turn the dial all the way down (104) to get a Golden Urn (Backpack Item, use ??), a Silver Mask (Backpack Item, use ??), a new Obsidian Prism (use ??) and a Korlinium Mace (+2 CS, Special Item).[2]

115 : look for medicinal plants in the swamp (191). Hunting and Healing increase your odds.

309 : Healing allowed. Recover 8 more Endurance points. Eat a Meal or use Hunting.

26 : Healing allowed. Dedicate the rest of the day to assembling a makeshift raft (75). Get Vyllylin (+4E when eaten) and a Crystal Star Pendant (allow once to re-pick a number on the RNT).

V'Ka[]

72 or 202 or 7 : if you have the Blue Crystal Talisman, follow the trail south (302) ; otherwise, follow it north (22).

302 : Sixth Sense (274) or not, enter the tunnel (98). Take the Torch to light your way (190 and 307). Wish to learn what he was doing here (175) and get a Lightning Rod (Special Item). You then (63) have 30% chances to die, reduced to 10% with Camouflage.

323 : easiest and safest way to neutralize the guard is by using a Bow+Arrow (129), especially thanks to Lorsan's Bow. Take his Warhammer if needed.

222 : use a Bow+Arrow (73) then (195) follow him inside (233). Take anything you need : Shield if needed, Alether (always useful), replenish you Quiver, ... and take the Black Case in your Backpack. Sixth Sense or Hunting (261) prevent an ambush (14) that can be deadly without Camouflage and no Shield. In any case, fight GIAKS (CS = 14 / E = 18).

271 :

  • If you have the Lightning Rod, prefer to dash straight to the lakeshore and prepare the boats aboard which the survivors will have to flee (186), and use the Lightning Rod (343, -2E).
  • If you have Mindshield but no Mindblast: hurry to the aid of Valiant Cub (259) and fight a VORDAK (CS = 17 / E = 19) then (229) fight (300) the KRYYGH (badly wounded) (CS = 21 / E = 19) with the help of Valiant Cub (+4 CS, endurance losses halved).
  • If you have Mindblast, or if you have neither Mindblast nor Mindshield, you will fight an enemy with 18 CS. If your Combat Ratio is ≥-4, save Arcanys (102) and fight to death a DRAKKAR (CS = 18 / E = 22) ; otherwise help Verdal (30) and fight 4 rounds FRENZIED GIAKS (CS = 18). Then (216) stand alongside Valiant Cub (262) and fight (300) the KRYYGH (badly wounded) (CS = 21 / E = 19) with the help of Valiant Cub (+4 CS, endurance losses halved).

45 : do not use Bow+Arrow (useless this time) (257). You no longer have a Lightning Rod (6). With the Blue Crystal Talisman (143) you are safe ; without it, use your Shield (241) that will be destroyed.

Final battles[]

200 : Healing allowed. Recover 4 Endurance points. You possess Lorsan's Bow (88). You have a Black Case (184) and with Mind over Matter (20) you get a Zejar-dulaga. Ask Valiant Cub how he ended up on the island on V'Ka (67).

239 : Healing allowed. Choose to defend the slaves at the rear (121) : shoot all your Arrows but do not shoot with the Zejar-Dulaga (unless it lets you get 40 points and you have at least 10 END). You may have to fight but evade combat when possible.

288 : evade your enemy's blind fury (218). Cowardly but safe.

248 : use a Bow with the Zejar-Dulaga (329) if possible ; otherwise (139) you loose 1-9 Endurance points and watch a Legend in action.

350 : VICTORY !

Notes[]

  1. As far as we know it, the Obsidian Prism is useful only to get the Korlinium Mace (+2 CS, Special Item). If you already have a magical weapon and are not proficient in Maces, the whole Obsidian Prism part may be skipped.
  2. The Lightning Rod avoids a difficult fight (only 2 END lost) but getting it implies a dangerous dodge-or-die test. Up to you !
  1. With previous books achieved, you can have a +2CS Sword (Blue-Steel Sword), a +2CS Short Sword (Rune Sabre), a +1CS Axe (Vakeros Axe), a +1CS Rapier and a +1CS Spear. 5 enhanced weapons on 10 possible.
  2. This is the 6th enhanced weapon on 10 possible.
