Three months after the events of The Plague Lords of Ruel, Lone Wolf learns that his friend, Guildmaster Banedon, has been abducted by a band of Giaks under the command of Nadziranim sorcerers. It is theorized that they are planning to torture him to extract magical techniques which can be united with their own dark sorcery. Lone Wolf and the reader must venture to Kaag, where Banedon is held, and attempt a rescue before he meets his demise, or worse, yields the coveted magical secrets of left-handed magic.
Design[]
Within Kaag, the Nadziranim had tortured and experimented on human prisoners, and turned into undead. These undead were left to wander the lower passages of Kaag, trapped, and the player encounters them in a mandatory section. This section, as well as its illustration, were designed to evoke the moment when the Allies of World War II found the Nazi concentration camps. Joe Dever felt was important to tackle themes beyond the realm of fantasy, and touch upon many real-life experiences that others would be familiar with, such as trauma and consequences of war. The bonus adventures involving Dire also touch upon similar themes.
I have to mention something that I want to preface as being a very sensitive subject. So I want listeners to understand that I'm treating this with the absolute respect, as did Joe and Brian. That image is meant to invoke, and I think it does, especially when you look at the illustration, that is meant to invoke the moment in World War II when the Allied troops find the concentration camps and the survivors within. The sallow skin, the sunken cheeks, the hopeless eyes. It's meant to be that powerful. And Joe — Joe absolutely treated it with respect because there is that helplessness and that hopelessness. This is what evil does to good. When it can't break their spirits, it breaks their bodies.
