Ulnar I (MS 3757–3799) was the thirteenth Monarch of Sommerlund and first of House Ulnar. During his reign, he fought against, and defeated, Archlord Vashna in the War of the Black Muster, but died in the process. His descendants have been pursued by the Acolytes of Vashna since, as the blood of his descendants can be used to revive Vashna.
Biography[]
Ulnar was the son of a clan leader of Durenor and a Sommlending mother, from which he received his Sommlending bloodline and latent Kai powers. He was appointed as the successor to Haigh III, and ascended to the throne in MS 3782 as Ulnar I, and the first Monarch of Sommerlund of House Ulnar.[1]
Ulnar I had a protégé, Baron Shaen Ruanor of Toran, who possessed latent Kai powers.[2] Ruanor later became Sun Eagle, the first Kai Lord.
In MS 3785, Archlord Vashna unleashed the War of the Black Muster upon Sommerlund, a brutal war where Holmgard and Toran saw long sieges. The Lastlands fought back, eventually breaking Vashna's army at the Battle of Moytura Pass in MS 3799, and defeating him in the Battle of Maakengorge. Here, Ulnar fought Vashna one-on-one with the Sommerswerd, eventually overpowering him and casting him and his forces into the Maakengorge. However, Ulnar I died in the process. He was succeeded by Bern I, his son and Crown Prince.[1]
Legacy[]
Despite his death, Ulnar I's descendants were hunted by the Acolytes of Vashna, as his blood could be used in a ritual to revive Vashna. In MS 5054, during the events of The Chasm of Doom, Madelon Vanalund, a distant descendant, was kidnapped for this purpose by Barraka and his forces, but the plot was foiled by Lone Wolf.[3] Then in MS 5102, during the events of Dead in the Deep, Kai Grand Master Steel Hand, not knowing he was a descendant of Ulnar I, was kidnapped while investigating the Acolytes in Zekgazad; he was later found to be a descendant by Teakkro, and preparations were made to sacrifice him. This plot was foiled by Grand Master, but the Dagger of Vashna fell into the Maakengorge. The Dagger of Vashna contained a portion of Vashna's spirit, and was unmade by the Nengud-kor-Adez that had migrated to the Maakengorge, releasing his spirit, and causing him to be reborn, merged with the Nengud-kor-Adez.[4]
