The Villains of Sommerlund refer to six of Sommerlund's most notorious criminals who were cast into the Shadow Gate of Toran for their crimes. This Shadow Gate led to the Daziarn, and was considered the ultimate punishment, for none had ever returned. These six survived the journey to the Daziarn, and under the leadership of their leader, Vonotar the Traitor, plotted their return to Magnamund using the power of a Lorestone. All six were eventually slain by Lone Wolf, who had been cast into the Daziarn via a different Shadow Gate.
History[]
The Shadow Gate of Toran served as the ultimate punishment for the harshest of crimes in Sommerlund: A journey through a Shadow Gate (which is punishing enough to sap the strength of even the then-Magnakai Lone Wolf[1]), and an exile into the Daziarn, an alien realm from which nobody had returned.[2] This was believed to effectively be a death sentence. However, six particular criminals cast through the Shadow Gate survived:
- Luvias Kort, the Poisoner of Tyso (banished in MS 4292)
- Falco, highwayman and cut-throat (banished some time between MS 4292 and MS 5062)[note 1]
- Porgron, murderer (banished before MS 4895)[note 2]
- Aieta Nematah, the Wytch of the Kirlundin Isles (banished in MS 4895)
- Gardor Vezh, Chief Druid of Malis Mound, necromancer and cannibal (banished in MS 5000)
- Vonotar the Traitor, who betrayed Sommerlund and the Kai to Darklord Zagarna, leading to the latter's death at the hands of Lone Wolf and the Sommerswerd (banished in MS 5051)
The initial survivors originally banded around Aieta Nematah as their leader, but after Vonotar encountered the group, he overpowered her and took control.[3] Nevertheless, she helped Vonotar in teaching him the nature of the Daziarn, and they worked together to survive.[3] These six survivors carved out a base of operations in the Temple of Sandai in Haagadar.
In MS 5062, Lone Wolf attempted to retrieve the Lorestones of Nyxator from the fortress of Torgar, where the Lorestones had been taken by Archlord Gnaag. The Lorestones were suspended above a Shadow Gate. As Lone Wolf attempted to retrieve them, Gnaag appeared and destroyed the gantry holding the Lorestones and Lone Wolf, casting them into the Shadow Gate. The Lorestones were scattered all over the Daziarn, but with Naar's guidance, Vonotar was able to recover one.[4] The Lorestone allowed Vonotar to open a Shadow Gate in Haagadar to return to Magnamund.[5]
Lone Wolf eventually tracked the last remaining Lorestone to Haagadar, encountering the Villains of Sommerlund. Vonotar ordered the other five Villains to attack Lone Wolf, who defeated them. Vonotar then grabbed a box containing the Lorestone and moved towards the Shadow Gate, but Lone Wolf chased him down. Vonotar then attacked with his Power Ring, lancing Lone Wolf with a jet of cold fire, before engaging Lone Wolf in combat.[6] Lone Wolf then slew Vonotar, took the Lorestone, and returned to Magnamund.
In the gamebooks[]
The Villains of Sommerlund are encountered in The Prisoners of Time, and serve as the final encounters of the gamebook.
Lone Wolf first fights Vonotar's underlings together:
- Villains of Sommerlund
Combat Skill 38, Endurance 46
↪The Prisoners of Time: §84
He then confronts Vonotar, who first attacks Lone Wolf with his Power Ring (costing 5 Endurance points), then fights him one-on-one:
- Vonotar the Traitor (with Power Ring)
Combat Skill 30, Endurance 21
Immune to: Mindblast, Psi-surge
↪The Prisoners of Time: §120
Lone Wolf then takes the Lorestone and steps into the Shadow Gate to return to Magnamund.
Notes[]
- ↑ In the podcast (43:36), August Hahn is unaware when he was banished, but his banishment was more modern than Luvias Kort's, who was banished in MS 4292.
- ↑ In the podcast (47:08), August Hahn states that Porgron was banished "in the [MS] 4800s", but before Aieta Nematah was banished (in MS 4895), and not too long before than that.
